Our suggestions for a stay
Gastronomy with the famous Bresse chicken, culture visiting the royal monastery of Brou, relax or sports: you are free to choose!
One day trip
9 am: a coffee on a café terrace in the old town, with a piece of Bressane pie. Peace and
pleasure to get the day off to a good start !
10 am: stroll around town, free visitors’ guide from the Tourist Office in hand, to get to know the city with Jérôme Lalande and Edgar Quinet, and learn more about the half-timbered houses, Renaissance façades and fountains encountered along the way. Enjoy a shopping break in the boutiques of the city centre.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays, pay a visit to the market, full of colours and flavours.
12:30 pm: tasting Bresse chicken in cream is a must ! In the city centre, near the royal monastery of Brou or in a country restaurant: there’s something for everyone.
2:30 pm: on Saturday, pay a visit to the nearby apothecary or on Wednesday, discover the machine operation museum (musée de la mécanographie).
In summer, head to Bouvent leisure park and the Seillon forest to enjoy the cool greenery. In winter, be pampered at the Carré bien être, a well-being centre at the Carré d’eau water sports centre in Bourg-en-Bresse.
4 pm: not to be missed: a visit to the royal monastery of Brou, the city’s iconic monument
7 pm: Comté cheese, crispy gaudélice biscuits, Bugey wine…
Enjoy a local aperitif before sampling a lovely quenelle in Nantua sauce, or some frogs’ legs.
Staying for the week-end?
The next day, heading to the heights of Revermont: walking, cycling, fresh air, charming villages and panoramas from the Alps to Bourgogne and Jura to Beaujolais are on your menu! Do not hesitate to take the path of the schoolchildren to visit some original or emblematic sites (dinosaur track, menhir, Revermont museum…) and meet artisans and producers who will share with pleasure their know-how and their love of the region. Sensation lovers, you will not be outdone: tree climbing, paragliding, mountain biking and many other outdoor activities await you!
The third day, continue your discovery on the Roads of the Bresse (Route de la Bresse): at the turn of meadows where the famous poultry graze, you can admire and visit the Bressan farms with Saracen fireplace so typical in our landscapes. Relaxation: Many lakes for water activities offer you many opportunities to slow down and to disconnect! And if you take the opportunity to see life in green…?
Staying longer? Nice idea! Ain valley (Vallée de l’Ain) at the foot of the vineyards of Bugey and Cerdon, birds park (Parc des oiseaux), medieval towns of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne and Pérouges, nautical stop at Pont-de-Vaux, Abbey of Ambronay, Caves of Cerdon, Trévoux or Ars-sur-Formans: the Ain offers you magical moments and beautiful encounters!
From the royal monastery of Brou to the centre of town, via the Bresse museum, heritage is child’s play for a family weekend. Just add some nature, nautic and outdoor activities to share so nice moments…
Open-air sports, wakeboard baptism and a night under the stars: try a “gentle” adventure and be a daredevil ! Don’t miss the largest disco in France, La Clé des Chants, located near Bourg-en-Bresse, and one of the most important nautic place in the region: La Plaine Tonique ! Have fun…
Les Glorieuses, an exhibition and competition of Bresse PDO poultry just before the winter holidays, promises a tasty and convivial break. All year round producers, small boutiques and restaurants invite you to taste our local products either in the town and in the countryside around.
